Sports Tourism
Guiding the growth of sports tourism as a core driver of the Central West visitor economy and community wellbeing.
Overview
Sports Tourism refers to travel motivated wholly or partly by participation in, spectating at, or supporting organised sport, active recreation, or competitive events. Within the Central West, sports tourism is already contributing a meaningful share of overnight visitation, particularly during major events, tournaments and training camps. While current maturity and capacity levels vary across the twelve LGAs, it is clear that the Central West has strong building blocks of a leading regional sports tourism destination.
Sports tourism presents a clear opportunity to grow the Central West visitor economy in ways that are consistent, resilient and aligned with community outcomes. Unlike many leisure markets, sports tourism generates travel based on fixed calendars and commitments; is less sensitive to seasonal price fluctuations; delivers strong mid-week and shoulder-season demand; and creates repeat visitation through clubs, circuits and annual events.
Central West Sports Tourism Strategy
The Central West Sports Tourism Strategy will guide the growth of sports tourism across the NSW Central West region. It provides recommendations to harnesses the strengths, uniqueness and synergies of the twelve LGAs across the region.
To develop the Strategy, a review of the current situation and opportunities across the region was undertaken to assess the strengths and challenges of the region’s current sports tourism offering and recommend strategic actions to assist in growing the sports-tourism market.
Destination Central West appointed industry specialists TRC Tourism, to undertake this work.
