As part of the Tablelands Way and at a height of thirteen hundred metres, Oberon is the highest town in the Blue Mountains. Ideally located less than three hours west of Sydney and two hours north of Canberra, visiting is easy. Oberon and its surrounding villages enjoy four distinct seasons each with something different to offer. During autumn visitors flock to the forests to gather mushrooms, there are a variety of spectacular private gardens open to visitors during autumn and spring each year, the daffodils are amazing. Summers are mild with virtually no humidity a perfect time to visit and experience all that nature has on offer including horse riding, bushwalking, four-wheel driving, cycling, fishing or fossicking for sapphires and other gemstones. Each season has its own attractions so don’t limit yourself to just one visit it takes at least four – one each season to appreciate the Oberon visitor experience.
Oberon is a timber town and a vibrant and exciting place to visit, blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery in NSW including the Kanangra Boyd National Park where you can walk camp or cycle the trails and is a photographer’s delight. The world renowned Jenolan Caves are close by so why not take a guided tour of the oldest limestone cave system in Australia or just enjoy this World Heritage Precinct. A visit to Mayfield Garden is also an experience not to be missed, internationally renowned, Mayfield is one of the largest privately owned cool climate gardens in the world.
Fish for trout or kayak on Lake Oberon, enjoy a round of golf at the spectacular course edging the lake. Visit the community markets, museums and historical buildings in the area including the Heritage Rail Precinct, taste local wines and produce, the choice is yours. Free camp at the Reef Reserve or enjoy some of the most varied and comfortable accommodation in the Central West.

Lucy East (nee Cunynghame one of Oberon’s oldest families, since 1841) is the new owner and restorer of the Malachi Gilmore Hall, one of the last art deco buildings left in the state. Over the years it has been a dance hall, cinema, cabaret venue and even a skating rink.

DAY 1
Explore the magic of Jenolan, just a 30 minute drive from Oberon; take your pick of tours in the oldest and surely the finest caves systems in the world. From Jenolan, drive out to the world heritage Kanangra Boyd national park for spectacular views of Kanangra Walls from the lookout, a walk down to Kalang Falls and around to the plateau.
Dine at your choice of cafes and restaurants in town, sampling wine from cool climate vineyards and fresh local produce.
DAY 2
Hire a Fossicking Kit from the Oberon Visitor Information Centre and drive out to one of the designated areas where you can look for gemstones and even gold.
Take in a spectacular scenic drive encompassing local historic villages and lunch at a country pub.
Then grab your fishing rod and try your hand at catching trout from the banks of Lake Oberon or paddle out in your kayak and capture that perfect photo for a lasting memory.
